Competitive Program

Competitive Philosophy
OSNK United is attempting to move away from a team approach and more into individual player development. This means that team rosters may be more dynamic with players moving from team to team as their skills develop. The main goal of this philosophy is to group players together that have similar skill sets and ultimately developing a large group of skilled players at each age group, creating more competitive teams. These large numbers become ever more important as the roster size increases at the U12 and U14 age groups. To assist with this development, OSNK United will make an effort to have same age group teams train/practice together as one group. This will allow for more consistent training by the coaches who will be able to observe all players and re-evaluate as needed.

About Competitive Teams
Following US Youth Soccer’s model, OSNK United's Competitive Program policy is to attempt to have single age specific teams below the U14 age group (U8, U9, U10, etc.). We will also attempt to field an A and B level team at each single age group. If we are unable to form a single age specific team, we will revert to the two year age grouping.

• Every player interested in playing on a competitive soccer team must tryout.
• No player is guaranteed a position on a team.
• Any player can be moved from team to team (see the Competitive Program Philosophy)

Who are the coaches of the Competitive teams?
OSNK United relies on US Soccer Federation licensed volunteer coaches for its Competitive teams. Most of our coaches have extensive experience both as players and as coaches.

What is the time commitment?
Competitive teams typically train two (2) days per week and have one (1) game a week. All OSNK United Competitive teams participate in the RI SuperLiga or the NECSL. The SuperLiga and NECSL include several divisions based on age, gender and level of play.  OSNK United teams will be placed in the appropriate divisions after discussions with the Competitive Coordinators and Coaches. The SuperLiga and NECSL seasons typically consist of eight (8) games, and all games are scheduled for Saturdays or Sundays, depending on division.

Where are the games?
The SuperLiga and the NESCL season typically consists of four (4) games and four (4) away games. The home games will be played at the OSNK United Fields (650 Stony Lane). The away games for Superliga will be played at other town’s fields throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts. The away games for the NESCL will be played at other town's fields throughout Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Who can participate in the Competitive Program?
OSNK United follows the US Youth Soccer age divisions and does not allow any player to "Play Up" on an older team without the approval of the player, parent(s), coaches of the respective teams, and the Competitive Coordinators

Behavior Expectations of Players (critical)
It is our expectation players will demonstrate appropriate sportsmanship at all times.  We also expect all parents to support us in this effort.  We expect each player to respect his coaches and teammates.  Our instruction time is limited so your child’s attention is critical. We ask all parents to set the stage with their children and get them in the mental state for competitive league soccer.

Expectations of Parents
• Support your Soccer players – please do not place emphasis on winning or losing games.  Talk positively about games and practices with them.  If your child is experiencing any problems with teammates, games or practices, PLEASE bring it to your coach’s attention.  They have seen many issues while coaching and should always be able to resolve any concerns.

• Be a Positive Role Model – We need to model what we preach.  Please help us by being positive role models of respect towards our teammates, coaches, referees and our opponents.

• Be Involved – Almost 100% of communication is via email.  Please check your email frequently.

• Bring your Soccer Player – Attendance is important.  We are aware soccer is a commitment and often run into conflicts.  Please make your coach aware if attendance is an issue or if you need assistance.

General Try-out Information
Player tryouts are offered once a year. All current and new players interested in joining a team must attend tryouts. Our objective is to form boys/girls teams per age group starting with U8. Often, there will be an ‘A’ team and a ‘B’ team – OSNK United evaluators select players based on perceived ability.

Players wishing to participate on a team must pre-register and attend tryouts on the published dates. If the number of players registered for the tryout is equal or less than the roster limit, OSNK may decide not to hold a tryout. This decision will be made after the registration closing date.

Player selection is based on the following:
  • Performance from the on-field evaluations at tryouts.
  • Coach evaluations conducted by OSNK United Head Coaches from prior seasons.
  • Previous game and training performances if such data exists.
This information will be used to place players on teams that will best fit their current and expected development.
